When snakes and insects show goodwill, they are likely hiding knives behind their backs. Never let yourself be deceived by their cajolery.

– Garuda's wisdom[1]

Garuda is a nastika, the king of the Garuda clan, and the father of Maruna, Yuta, and Kalavinka. He is currently comatose due to problems with the power of the name, while his clanmates search for a way to wake him up.

Appearance

In his human form, Garuda appears as a tall, athletic man with very pale skin-tone (especially compared to his own family members). He has long, white hair and gray eyes, and the upper part of his face is covered by a gray mask. Garuda has six large, white wings that he can generate and dismiss at will.[2] He wears black trousers and a thin black jacket with thin white outlines. In the past, he possessed a sword with a zig-zag handguard; this is the sword that his son Yuta currently has in his possession; it was passed on from Garuda to Maruna, and sometime later to Yuta.

Personality

Garuda appears to have a similar collected and honorable personality as Maruna. He seems to not be very talkative, but puts weight behind the words he speaks. He once advised his son never to trust snakes or insects.[3] According to Taraka, he ignored Yuta.

Skills and Abilities

Nothing is currently known about Garuda's transcendental skills.

Notes

  • Garuda appears to have a throne.
  • While Maruna was on Planet Carte, he claimed the only one he did not miss from his family was his father.
  • Despite the fact that his wife was the second strongest in the clan by the time of the side novel the finite, there was a huge difference in strength between them.
  • A percentage of the king's power works on the whole clan, however, Garuda's state leaves the king's position of his clan empty, resulting in no percentage getting shared at all.[4]
  • In the printed volumes, there is a panel where Garuda is giving a flower to a smiling and pregnant Kali.[5]

Plot

History

Garuda is a nastika, and the king of the Garuda clan. Over the billions of years of his existence, he has had many children, but only his three youngest still survive. [6]

1-36 four friends

Garuda with his friends[7]

A long time ago, Garuda agreed into undergoing an alliance with Gandharva and Shuri. This alliance developed into a strong friendship, also shared by the primeval god Visnu.[8]

Garuda has three living children. His wife Vinata was the mother of the oldest, Maruna, and the youngest, Kalavinka; his middle child, Yuta, resulted from a mysterious relationship with primeval god Kali.[9] Eventually, he took Yuta in at the Garuda clan stronghold when his son escaped from Taraka about 300 years ago, and continued to raise him there.[6]

However, the three siblings had to go into hiding because of the power of names. Maruna was sent to Gandharva on Planet Carte, Yuta to Shuri on Planet Isholy, and Kalavinka to Vishnu on Planet Willarv.[8]

In the year N0, Garuda's wife Vinata died and Garuda slipped into a coma. When the boundary between realms was closed off by primeval god Vishnu, this resulted in Garuda, in the sura realm, being cut off from his name holder, theorized by Akasha to be either Yuta or Kalavinka, both in the human realm.[10]

Vinata's death put Akasha as the second-strongest in the clan, who forced Maruna to develop into his 4th stage and ordered him to either bring his siblings back to the sura realm alive or kill them, in a bid to awaken Garuda.[6][10]

Season 1

Chapter 3: The Sorrow of Loss

(4) On Garuda's request, his friend Gandharva trained Maruna on a lava planet.

Chapter 6: The Past I Yearn For/Longing for Yesterday

1-36 Garuda and Vinata

giving up children

(1) Garuda had three friends whom he entrusted his children to when he could no longer take care of them himself. Maruna went to Gandharva, the second to Shuri, and the third the primeval god Visnu. Garuda was sitting on his throne along with Vinata when making the decision. After being separated from his family, Maruna, through a flashback, makes it known to Shakuntala that he misses his father the least out of his mom and siblings.

In a flashback, a second stage Maruna complains to Shakuntala about how he misses his mother and siblings, but not his father.

(4) Sagara curses the tongue of Garuda's son Maruna when he arrogantly admits that snakes are his favorite meal and he can't wait to eat her and her group.

(5) Maruna contrasts that Garuda's personality and way of ruling is very different from Gandharva's who sought to keep peace in his clan and was more affectionate towards his family.

(7) When Sagara attempts to manipulate Maruna, he quotes his father's wisdom about never trusting the snakes and the insects. Sagara notes that Maruna and Garuda are so alike that it is confusing.

Chapter 8: The Wavering King

(3) In a flashback to N5, Hanuman tells Gandharva that Visnu and Shuri are gone, and Garuda may never wake up.

Chapter 10: The Night it Rained Fire

(11) Visnu, who grew lonely as he lived among the humans while raised Kalavinka in Willarv, sought the company of his sura friends. Since he couldn't call forth Garuda, Shuri, or Gandharva because it would be dangerous to have any of Garuda's children together, Visnu called for his friend, Taksaka, for company.

Alliance

alliance

(17) Shess notes that it is a shame that the alliance between the Garuda, Gandharva, and Yaksha clans seems to be dissolving with their founders no longer present. A flashback shows Shuri and Garuda reluctantly shaking hands while Gandharva holds their hands together with a smile.

(18) Garuda stands behind Vinata as she explains the insight of gods to a little Maruna.

Chapter 12: Lies for You

(1) When Yuta escaped from Taraka, a dummy substituting for Kali, she said that neither Garuda, Shuri, or Visnu can stop her, no matter what dirty tricks they pull, she will eventually find Yuta.

(5) Taraka says that Garuda barely acknowledges Yuta's existence and Vinata only cared for her own children.

1-97 Garuda and Taraka

a mother for her son alone

(8)(9) Taraka was implanted Kali's memories of being the queen of the Taraka clan, of having a proud son with Garuda, and of being a great beauty, but none of that was true. Tarakas's true form was that of a monster. Upon her creation, Garuda commented that she was truly a mother created for her son alone and he concluded that he was given permission to leave. He expresses gratitude for the first, last, and only consideration Kali has shown to him, even if his voice cannot reach her anymore.

Season 2

Chapter 22: The One Standing Before Me

(3)(5) Maruna reveals that their father collapsed after the Cataclysm and asks Yuta to return to the sura realm with him. Yuta fears that it would be dangerous for the siblings to reunite because of the power of the name. Maruna claims that someone far worse and with no regard for Yuta's life will come after him because of the name if Yuta does not come along now.

Chapter 26: Outsider

2-102-Garuda

comatose

(2)(3) In a flashback to the year N1, a 3rd stage Maruna is brought before his comatose father by Akasha, the strongest nastika of those who remain in the Garuda clan. When Maruna shows disinterest in the situation, Akasha brings up that Maruna had many older brothers who were just as arrogant at third stage as him.

Chapter 27: Last Resort/Last Stand

(3) Maruna explains that Akasha ordered him to bring back both Yuta and Kalavinka because one of them might be the reason for Garuda's collapse. The problem began when the realms got separated and the power of the name got cut off in the human realm. According to Akasha, Garuda may wake up if all siblings return. And if not, then...

Chapter 28: Emergency/Flight

(1)(6) Samphati arrives on Willarv following Akasha's orders, and she says she is aware that Yuta is on the planet and killing him just might suffice as a solution for waking Garuda, making finding Kalavinka unnecessary. Maruna speaks against pursuing Yuta and points out that nastikas, aside from Akasha, are against this plan. If Garuda wakes up, he would not be happy about learning of the extreme measures that were taken.

Season 3

Chapter 41: Your Seven Years

(7) Sagara reveals that the reason Akasha sent Samphati to aid Sagara was to learn the secret trick that Sagara used to become king despite not being the strongest in her clan.

Chapter 49: The Golden Knight 2

(8) Having developed to 5th stage, Maruna's resemblance to Garuda has increased, making Samphati uncomfortable.

(9) Tatia suggests that Garuda would be sad to see that Maruna had killed millions of humans. Maruna believes that if Garuda cared about such things, he would not have entrusted Maruna to Gandharva.

Chapter 50: The Weight of Time

Spoiler warning!
This article contains plot details about an upcoming episode.

(5)(6) In D500, when the gods waged a campaign to kill Ananta, the Yaksha and Garuda clans blocked all passages so that the Asura clan would be unable to reach the Ananta clan and provide assistance. All rakshasas and lower were to stay in the human realm while the battles in the sura realm raged, so as to avoid the all-out destruction.

Two beings believed to be rakshasas from the Yaksha and Garuda clans fight in the Abyss, a space allowing quicker passage between distant places in the sura realm. Garuda himself decides to intervene and he especially scolds the Garuda rakshasa (Maruna from the future) for defying orders. He gives Maruna no room for explanations and Ran Sairofe (from the future), using sura speech in a successful attempt to impersonate a rakshasa, asks Garuda for advice where to go. Garuda suggests they go to Shuri. Before leaving, Maruna tells Garuda to protect Vinata and cherish his name.

Asura in a battle frenzy crashes in and requests a duel with Garuda. Garuda faces the challenger, Ran and Maruna are flung out of the Abyss, and the environment far and wide begins to crumble due to the intensity of the battle.
