I see you are living for the dead. I, on the other hand, live for the living. And that is why I have always had only one wish... for Kubera to find happiness.

– Rao, to a young Asha, before his disappearance[1]

Rao Leez is a pure-blood and the father of Kubera Leez. He was the first owner of the god-level item the Neutral Bow. He disappeared from a rescue transport en route from Planet Carte to Planet Willarv in the year N5, at the age of 29; he is presumed dead.

His marriage with Anna Haias was not a formal one,[2] and the fact that they had a daughter was only known to his best friend (a fighter) and the local villagers.

Rao was the one who gave his daughter the name "Kubera," which is the name she was known by in her village. Sometimes the villagers also called her "Leez," after her father.

Rao is one of the leading forces in the world of Kubera; clues about him will gradually be revealed.

Appearance[]

Rao is a tall young man with lightly tanned skin tone. He has short, curly, messy, light blue-green hair, and wears brownish-gray sports-suit in the photo in which he appears.[3] In another flashback, Rao wears a white long-sleeved shirt, blue trousers, and black shoes.[4]

Personality[]

Rao-onaphoto

Rao and Anna

He was seen as reckless man who threw himself in the gravest dangers, unconcerned with value of his own life. One can call him irresponsible for leaving his pregnant wife to set off to Carte, or too dedicated in his desire to help others.[5]

According to Ran Sairofe, Rao ate well, slept well, laughed well, he had a trusting personality, he lept into danger with no hesitation and without knowing the value of life.[6]

According to Vayu, Rao would deceive himself in order to maintain his vigor, to the point that others became unable to see him for who he is. Rao felt that he does not belong, and his life was lonely.[7]

Skills and Abilities[]

Rao was a strong fighter, the victor of the fighters championship of D995[8], and a man acknowledged even by suras and gods for his skills.[9]

Although he was a pureblood human, he was able to use transcendental skills. He could use magic without calculations and god-level items.[6] He had the ability to rise to the top of a cliff in one step[10] and he was gifted the Neutral Bow, one of the most powerful god-level items ever created.[11]

Autobiography[]

Rao has a biography, "How I Survived: Autobiography of Rao Leez, the Final Champion."[12] However, it was not written by him, but by many of his fans and peers, and is considered somewhat unreliable for that reason. Many who see the book for the first time think it really is about "survival," but it is about his fights. It is full of praise about him from the beginning to the end, with the intent to instill awe into the reader. Nevertheless, it was a bestseller. Because of Rao's high popularity, all items advertised under his name sold like crazy—even books. (Some others like Mr.Kasak were popular as well, but Rao's popularity still surged because of people going like "How..? He's a pure-blood human?!", totally surprised.)

Because of his nature of rarely refusing requests, Rao often made appearances at advertising festivals; but he was often very busy, so companies just gave him clothes. Everything he wore instantly became popular.[2]

Notes[]

  • Rao Leez won the Fighter Championship in year D995. He gave the gold medal he received to Anna as a birthday present.[8]
  • Since he was really popular, all products advertised under his name easily sold out. Ran once received fighting gear as a birthday present, and he happily applauded "because it was advertised by Rao Leez."[13]
  • The Neutral bow fell to earth (Willarv) when Rao disappeared from the transport from Carte.

History[]

1-91 idealistic (detail)

making a wish

Rao Leez was a skilled fighter and magician from Willarv, and the father of Kubera Leez.

He achieved so much while he was still young, that little more remained for him to accomplish.[3] He won a fighters championship in D995[8] and he was renowned not only among humans, but also among suras and gods.[9]

Rao secretly got married to another fighter, Anna Haias, but while she was pregnant, he left for the planet Carte.[6] The Cataclysm of N0 made it impossible for him to return and so he was still on Carte when disaster struck and the planet was all but destroyed. He was on board the last transport ship from Carte to Willarv[3] and he was granted the Neutral bow by god Vayu on this occasion,[11] but circumstances made it so that he had to sacrifice himself in order for the ship to land.[14]

And so, no one has ever heard of him since N5 and he never got the chance to see his daughter.[6] Regardless, he seems to have a strong influence over all those he interacted with, especially Asha Rahiro whose actions seemed to be tied to his fate and wishes.

Chapter 7: Half (半)[]

(7) Leez recalls Roen gushing over how extraordinary a fighter Anna was to the point that Anna was considered superior even when compared to her fellow half fighter friends. Her mother calls her over and little Kubera asks when dad will come home.  Anna says he will come when Kubera is older. Kubera wonders why he cannot come now since she wants to see him so much. Does he not want to see her?

Ran explains that the dates on the portraits are the year of birth and the year of death. When he notices that Leez is looking at Rao's picture, he asks Leez if she knows him. Leez claims she merely read his autobiography and wished to see him one day. She calls herself stupid for not realizing he was dead already.

Ran tells her that Rao was an exceptional fighter, a pure-blood and user of transcendental skills. He won the fighters championship before the age of 20. He was immensely talented and a good man, everyone adored him. He enjoyed nearly everything the world had to offer at a young age and perhaps his only fault was that he achieved too much too early a had no goal to live for. That he did not know the value of his life and threw himself into danger without a second thought.

2-11 Rao regrets

I want to hold our child

Luck must have been with him, because he always survived even situations that should have resulted in certain death. He took on the most dangerous missions of the Fighters guild. Until he was chosen for an expedition to Carte, just before the Cataclysm began.

Leez realizes that Rao must have left while her mother was pregnant and wonders if Rao did not care about his family.

Ran adds that Rao did not die during the Cataclysm, he was sighted in N5 on the last transport ship from Carte to Willarv, but he was no longer on board once the ship arrived in Eloth. The passengers who saw him said that Rao acted very much unlike his usual self. He was crying that he wishes to live, that he wants to see Anna again, and, even once, he desires to hold their child.

Anna, I want to live. I want to see you again. And... even if it's just once... I want to hold our child.

– Rao on the transport ship [5]

The problem is that no one knows how to use it. Ran also learns from a clerk that the bow fell from the sky in the year N5, and a shock wave resulted from its landing place, destroying nearby forests.

It was a mistake

(2) Asha recalls Rao saying that no matter what others may think, the things Asha did were definitely mistakes. Asha called him an idiot and cried, asking why he would continue to trust her. Rao told her that this is so because she still has much ahead of her and he believes that she may someday return to the right path.

I truly believe in the possibility that in the future, a child who has strayed towards the wrong path too early in life may one day return to the right one.

– Rao to Asha[16]

(8) Mirha Simon says she wants to protect Leez's smile because it resembles Rao's.[17] And hopes for Leez to become a hero just like Rao.[18] Mirha is a survivor of Carte. She and Asha Rahiro were also on board the last transport ship from Carte to Willarv.

He explains that because of problems with the transport system since the Cataclysm, it took five years for the image to be transmitted.

(27)(29)(30) Asha admits to sparing Leez only because she is Rao's daughter. She does not mind killing suras or humans as long as they are not from Rao's family. If Leez did not carry the name "Leez", things would have been less bothersome. Even so, she is willing to kill Leez if she becomes a burden.

Chapter 32: Loser[]

(5) Asha declares that her ties with Rao are hereby severed because his daughter was the one who botched things up. Even if Asha finishes this on her own, she will have no reason to apologize to him.

(8) Asha admits that she was the last person to see Rao on the transport ship from Carte... and that is because she killed him. Were he alive, Leez's fate would have been far better and Asha considered that unfair.

Chapter 33: Asha[]

2-177 what ifs

what could have been

(4) When Vishnu was about to give young Asha her list of choices for what to do after the year N15, she first asked him a question: Why does she have to shut down the transport engine room and make it look like an accident? He explains that two people will die on the transport as a result: the Priest of Wind, from using up her lifespan after summoning the God of Wind, and a second person who will use his own body as a shield to prevent the ship from crashing on Willarv. Asha questions allowing a person who would be a strong opponent to the suras to die. Visnu explains that his death would upend the life of another candidate who has the potential to become even stronger than Asha.

In the present, Asha ponders whether she would have been happier had she made a different choice. She imagines a future in which she had returned to Willarv alongside Rao, and got accepted as part of the Leez family.

Season 3[]

Chapter 40: Twisted Bird[]

(8) Vayu states that Leez has come to resemble Rao not just in appearance, but in terms of personality also: when her emotions would drain her of vigor, she deceives herself, and this allows her to control her vigor. Vayu tells her that he was fond of Rao which is why he gave him the Neutral bow. He warns her not to live a life where she deceives herself since others will then be unable to see her for who she is. She will feel that she does not belong, and her life will be lonely... just like Rao's.

(12) During her stay in the sura realm, Leez learned that Rao was famous not only in the human realm, but the gods and suras also knew him. Since she bears a strong resemblance to him, everyone she met commented on it.

Chapter 41: Your Seven Years[]

(3) Clari Utas was a fan of Rao and she finds the idea that he had a daughter ridiculous. Apparently, there were rumors that Rao was gay or infertile because he was entirely uninterested in women. Moreover, she believes Anna could not have been the mother.

Chapter 45: Crime and Punishment[]

(11) Kali tells two stories about what Asha Rahiro did to Rao Leez, without suggesting which, if either, is true.

In one story, Asha planned to kill Rao but found herself hesitating. She attempted to remove the traps she set and save him, but despite her efforts, Rao died.

In the other story, Asha tried to kill Rao without any hesitation but Rao survived, given strength by his desire to see his daughter again.

final words

(9) Asha and Siera Sies discuss why Asha spared Leez. Asha thinks back to Rao speaking about his wish and his faith in a certain probability. As a crying Asha sat across from a dying Rao, her right arm and his body seemingly falling apart, he told her never to forget the day and to see the truth even if her soul decays.

None of those who have accessed the records of time were able to see the part where Asha kills Rao.

You must not forget this day, Asha. Even if your soul rots because of sin... your eyes should look to the truth...

– Rao's dying words, spoken to Asha[19]
