Shakuntala is a rakshasa of the Gandharva clan and the only child of the king, Gandharva and his wife Menaka. In the first two seasons of the webtoon, she has been missing since her last sighting in the sura realm and is presumed dead.

Appearance[]

In her human form, Shakuntala appears as a young woman, with light-greenish skin. She has thick long green hair that she keeps untied, but tied in a wide ponytail with a green ribbon in her earlier stages. Shakun has green eyes and green eyebrows and light-green ears that appear as pointy formations of skin or hair. She has two similar formations on her back, that like her ears, grows more dense as she ages. Shakuntala wears a long green sleeveless dress with a neck guard that leaves her back bare. As an adult, she also wears two green sleeves that are fastened to her arms by thin green ribbons. Like her father Gandharva, she is often seen barefoot. Shakuntala is said to resemble Menaka|her mother greatly.

Shakuntala's sura form is like an octopus or a sea anemone. When in her sura form she has green tentacles, which can be seen vaguely seen during the attack on Kalibloom. As at this stage she had been absorbed by a taraka the real appearance of her sura form may be slightly different.

Personality[]

Shakuntala has a pacifistic and modest personality. Throughout her life, her father has been extremely overprotective of her. She seems to like flowers, and is often seen kneeling on a bed of flowers while composing a chain of flowers.

She was fond of Maruna, insisting to his father they should take him in. They spent a long time together, while the Garuda rakshasa trained with her father. Shakun enjoyed teasing Maruna in an affectionate way, which annoyed him a lot when he was in his 3rd stage and still immature.

She was also fond of children and was often found playing and taking care of them. Whenever she had the chance, she would help the weakest of the Gandharva clan. Shakuntala is very selfless, stating once that to "stay [there], with the other children, until the end" was enough for her.

Skills and Abilities[]

Not much is known about Shakuntala's abilities, as she never had to use them in a fight as her father protected her from everything. The only abilities she has shown are more recovery based than either defensive or offensive. Despite her royal heritage, Shakuntala is weak for a sura, as shown by her unusually fast development. Her weakness is notable because both of her parents are strong nastikas.[2]

Healing Abilities: She has healing skills, and often uses them on herself because of her low tolerance for the toxic environment of the sura realm.[3]

Notes[]

  • According to Agni, Gandharva never started a fight before his daughter's disappearance, because Shakuntala would stop him.
  • Her nickname is Shakun.
  • Sagara has stated twice that Shakuntala is dead and even Gandharva used to wonder how long she would last without him in the sura realm.

Plot[]

History[]

1-14 Gandharva and Shakuntala

A young Shakuntala was kidnapped by the gods, but is returned to Gandharva by Agni, who thus saves both Gandharva's and Shakuntala's life. As a result of this, later on she made her father promise her he would not fight Agni.

She is often shown to be arranging flowers, making bouquets and daisy chains. While rarely wearing one herself, she has equipped both Gandharva and Maruna with one. Her modest ways have at one point calmed a maddened Maruna.

Upon realizing how important she was to her father, she requested personally, that if she was used as a bait ever again, he would not go out of his way to save her. She claims that she understands she is important for him, but that Gandharva is more important for the clan.

By the year N0, Shakuntala and the rest of her clan were forced to adapt to the sura realm. She's seen with Urvasi commenting on the danger of the atmosphere for the little ones. Her father arrives and tells her he had been worried about her and considered making an ocean so she would be comfortable. Shakun thanks him for worrying about her and guarantees him she'll be fine. She takes her leave along with Urvasi claiming she should go to help those in need, Gandharva notices she's shivering as they leave. Manasvin confirms Gandharva's suspicions about Shakun getting poisoned and healing herself to avoid worrying him.

1-53 Shakuntala

Shakuntala refuses to go

The situation for the Gandharva clan worsened and Urvasi advised everyone to leave the weak behind and take refuge in the Garuda Stronghold. By those standards, Shakuntala was to remain there, but as the daughter of the King, she was allowed to go to the Garuda. She found this unfair and refused to go, preferring to remain with the children that were going to be left. She was advised against it by Makara, who explained her that if she remains there, her father will not leave, either and would try to create an ocean. Shakuntala understands, but still refuses to go and, as predicted by Makara, Gandharva also stays.[4]

Gandharva has a flashback where Shakuntala is shown being taken away with tears in her eyes, calling for him.[5]

Season 1[]

Chapter 1: A Girl With a God's Name[]

(2) Gandharva briefly mistakes Leez Haias for Shakuntala, his missing daughter. When he realizes that Leez is definitely not Shakuntala, he admonishes himself for ever thinking someone with a face like Leez's could be Shakuntala.

Chapter 3: The Sorrow of Loss[]

(3) Gandharva recalls the time Agni saved Shakuntala from a hostage situation rather than using her to kill him.

(4) When Maruna insinuates that Shakuntala is dead, Gandharva is angered, telling him that his daughter is definitely alive and he should never speak of her that way.

(5) Gandharva recalls his daughter when Agni tells him he'll retaliate by killing the remaining of his clan if Gandharva was to go through with killing his summoner.

(6) When Gandharva gets into a fight with Agni, he suddenly recalls memories of his daughter Shakuntala, who had asked him to not fight against Agni as he saved their lives. With this in mind, Gandharva gives up the fight.

(7) Agni debates out loud why Gandharva started a fight when he never did before. He starts to recall Gandharva's daughter but can't remember her name. Agni downplays his misremembrance when Gandharva replies her name is Shakuntala and lowered the temperature some more. Agni insinuates she's dead and asks who killed her so that he could join Gandharva on his revenge. Gandharva stares down Agni and drops the temperature to -89°C. He declares that he has no one to rely on. Unlike the humans who can pray to the gods regardless if it's heard, he can't. He is the king of his clan, but is recognized as an abomination by the gods, therefore, at his position, he has no turn to for anything, not even for the safety of his daughter. Agni reflects the same is true for the gods but keeps it to himself. He then asks Gandharva to rely on him, the 3rd most popular god among the humans. He may not be able to do anything but he will always listen. Gandharva quips that he'll remain an atheist, smiles, and raises the temperature from -89°C to -10°C.

Just when the two are making progress, something flying above them catches Agni's attention. He figures it's the Garuda sura responsible for the red sky attacks. Agni gets to his feet quickly to try to get back to Brilith but is frozen by Gandharva before he could do anything. Gandharva accepts that Agni cares for his summoner however maintains that his daughter is more important. He wishes they were both in the same side, but recognizes it will never be more than a wish.

(9) Gandharva begins to attack Agni again until he recalls Shakuntala's request to not fight with Agni; he then relents and begins to cry.

Chapter 5: The Golden Knight[]

(3) Gandharva is in a dilemma as the easiest city he can attack according to Maruna is Atera. However, attacking Atera would break his promise to Agni. Gandharva waves the thoughts of his promise to Agni aside. The actual promise he's trying to keep is his promise to Shakuntala to not fight with Agni. Gandharva cries at the thought of her.

(9) After Kubera asks Gandharva if he trusts him, Gandharva recalls an image of his daughter and explains that with their sore history, whatever trust that Gandharva may have on Kubera hinges on finding his daughter alive. Gandharva ends the conversation by reminding Kubera that their already strained relationship depends on his daughter's survival.

Chapter 6: The Past I Yearn For/Longing for Yesterday[]

(1) Through a series of multiple flashbacks from Maruna, it is revealed that he and Shakuntala were childhood friends, much to the disapproval of Gandharva. She welcomed Maruna when he was left to the care of her father, and was oblivious to his sufferings brought on by her father in the name of development. Even after exhaustive training, Shakuntala developed earlier than Maruna, who was left feeling deceived. When Maruna complains to Shakuntala about all that pointless training, missing his mother and siblings, and expressing desire to just skip this point of his life and get to 4th stage already, Shakuntala urges him to value the present moments more, because although they may seem meaningless, they will never return, and realizing their worth once they are gone would be sad.

In the present time, in his thoughts, Maruna explains that the days he wishes to return to are the days spent with his family. He was unable to see any of them after the Cataclysm, and as much as he misses Shakuntala's smile, he misses his family more. He considers that Gandharva must be feeling the same way about her.

Maruna joins Gandharva to convince him that Atera would be a better choice of attack over Rindhallow. Gandharva instead details him of a different plan that doesn't entail attacking Atera. He informs Maruna of a gate to the sura realm opening today that would allow them to find Shakuntala. Maruna is confused as they have already tried questioning the suras entering Willarv through those gates regarding Shakuntala's whereabouts and yielded no results. Gandharva clarifies that he will be the one to go through the gate into the sura realm to search for Shakuntala, and have already received "his" blessings regarding this new plan. Maruna thinks that if the plan is successful, Gandharva searching for Shakuntala in his sura form would be much easier. However, Maruna is skeptical as he knows that finding Shakuntala alive is the only reason why Gandharva is on "his" side.

After Maruna leaves, Gandharva, through a memory, recalls baby Shakuntala making a necklace for her mother. When Gandharva sulks, Menaka urges Shakuntala to make another one for her dad. In another separate memory of what seems to be Menaka's last wishes, Gandharva recalls her words urging him to keep Shakuntala safe that is juxtaposed with another memory of a crying, distraught Shakuntala screaming for her dad. Gandharva looks up to the sky asking she wait just a little bit more and that daddy is coming.

(2) Although there's a chance of Gandharva's plan succeeding and he finds Shakuntala, Maruna, distrustful of Kubera, still gathers mara and upani-ranking suras to attack Rindhallow just in case.

(3) In another flashback, the Gandharva clan is seen begging Gandharva to make an ocean. Makara, the second strongest clan member, takes the heat of the clan and lets Gandharva go to Shakuntala. Makara reassures them that Gandharva is doing his best for the sake of the clan, only for Urvasi to scoff at this, saying that it was all for Shakuntala. Shakuntala worries for her weaker and younger clanmates. She makes fun of Maruna who's still stuck in 3rd stage. Maruna fires back calling her an old hag, and earned her father's punch. Gandharva is relieved that she's handling the toxicity of the sura realm finely as she's normanly sensative to poison. If she had suffered, Gandharva would have tried to make an ocean for her. Shakuntala replies she doesn't want that, but is appreciative. Urvasi compares how slow Maruna's development is going to Shakuntala's faster one. Maruna retaliates back that rakshasas who develop fast are defective, but is cut off by Gandharva. Urvasi takes Shakuntala away, and when Gandharva turns to say his goodbyes, he sees Shakuntala visibly tremoring.

Later, when the leader of the Ananta clan, Manasvin, visits Gandharva, he reveals that Shakuntala is suffering in the toxic environment, but putting up a facade to protect her father.

(4) When Sagara crosses over to the human realm before he could use it, Gandharva demands to know what happened to his daughter. Sagara tells him that defective daughter has already been dead for quite some time. She continues to scorn how terrible a king Gandharva is with always putting his wife first when she was alive, not remarrying when she died, and now obsessing over his daughter to the detriment of his clan.

Maruna advises Gandharva abandon this plan when they see the massive amount of suras using the one-way gate to leave the sura realm.

(5) Maruna thinks about how the only thing preventing Gandharva from returning to his old personality and going completely insane is the hope that his daughter is still alive. Later in the episode, Gandharva is angry at God Kubera, who in turn tells him to keep in line and follow orders unless he wants to abandon his daughter. Gandharva then thinks back to a time when Shakuntala asked him not to rescue her if she were ever held hostage, because he was much more important to their clan than she is. Gandharva surrenders to Kubera's orders as he will never abandon his daughter, and leaves to be alone.

Chapter 8: The Wavering King[]

(3) In a flashback, the Gandharva clan is seen struggling against an adversary. Urvasi, who is holding the adversaries off, says that it would be better if the stronger clan members fled to the Garuda clan stronghold; however, Shakuntala is presenting a problem. Shakuntala tells her father that she wishes to be left behind with the weaker suras. She does not want to receive preferential treatment just because she is the king's daughter, and wants to stay with the children so they are not alone.

A fourth sura (recognizable as Makara)[1] tells Shakuntala that if she continues to be stubborn, the king will end up trying to create an ocean at the risk to his own life. She still refuses to go, saying that she simply wanted to stay with the children until the end. The present-day Gandharva laments that saving the clan is not worth it without Shakuntala there, and he would not be able to live on without her.

In the forests outside Rindhallow, Sagara reveals to Maruna the reason why he gave Gandharva false hope of finding his daughter – it was to cause emotional resonance and force Maruna to join Sagara in her plan to attack Atera.

(7) When talking with Kubera about how he got others to help him, Sagara mentions Shakuntala as the reason Gandharva is helping Kubera.

Chapter 10: The Night It Rained Fire[]

(5) Gandharva admits to Shess that he's feeling awful because he may never find his daughter due to being manipulated by a certain someone. Later in the episode, when Gandharva realizes that Agni will believe that Gandharva had betrayed his trust, he thinks back to Shakuntala, who had asked him not to fight Agni, and mentally apologizes.

Chapter 11: The Power of the Name[]

(2) When Hura insults the state of the Gandharva clan due to who their king is, Sagara indicates to her rakshasas that it wasn't always like this. She reflects that Gandharva "wasn't so bad before he got married. We were of different clans, but I thought he was a king worthy of my respect..." To Sagara, Menaka and Shakuntala were "unrealistic wenches [who] ruined Gandharva and brought the downfall of the whole Gandharva clan."

Season 2[]

Chapter 14: Blood[]

(2) When Gandharva sits by the window, thinking about how Sagara told him of his role in the plan—killing the Priest of Chaos—and that they are much alike, not caring for their clans for their own trivial purposes. Gandharva thinks that no, Shakuntala is no trivial purpose and that he is nothing like Sagara.

Chapter 16: Caution[]

(2) Gandharva, feeling uneasy about killing Teo Rakan, the Priestess of Chaos, reminds himself that she is worth nothing compared to Shakuntala.

Chapter 17: Reflection[]

(2) When a hoti yama'd Leez is conversing with Gandharva (whom she believes to be a half), she mentions how she thinks suras are truly evil. Gandharva tells her to not judge so easily, as he has no other choice; he needs to find his daughter. He continues telling a confused Leez that there are a lot of difficulties he must overcome before finding Shakuntala, but he has become weak, and it is possible that he will die before meeting her. When Gandharva asks Leez to place herself in this situation, she tells him that she would rather her father stay there, rather than suffering, and asks him if he's considered how his daughter would feel if she found out that her father had died while on his way to meet her. This leads Gandharva to think back to when Shakuntala had told him that, if she was ever kidnapped, not to rescue her.

Chapter 20: Grudge[]

(6) When Hura voices their pity of the priest for searching for a daughter who's already been eaten, Cloche blurts out that this was just like Gandharva. Hura asks if this means Shakuntala was really eaten, and Cloche claims that it was quite likely.

Chapter 21: Frozen Tears[]

(1) Sagara continues to provoke a distraught Gandharva, using information on his daughter Shakuntala in order to push him to his breaking point.

(2) In a flashback to the year N5, Shakuntala listens in on a conversation between Urvasi and Makara, Urvasi complaining about how there was no ocean made for the Gandharva clan, and how he wished Gandharva would make an ocean instead. In response, Makara says that Gandharva could die, showing Urvasi that a skill that would normally destroy an entire planet in the human realm simply blew a hole in a mountain in the sura realm; meaning creating an ocean would be incredibly difficult. Urvasi apologizes, but is still upset about the state of the clan. Shakuntala leaves to find her father. When she reaches Gandharva, she tearfully apologizes to him, telling him about a rakshasa that had wandered outside their territory and succumbed to the harsh environment. For a while, she thought that it would have been better if her father had created an ocean, despite the danger, and felt so awful thinking this. Gandharva reassures her that she is a good person, and that the promised ocean would certainly come.

(3) As the Gandharvas are assisted in a battle against the Tarakas, the Gandharva clan has a plan to have their strongest suras go into hiding. However, Gandharva does not want to leave without his daughter, who in turn refuses to go in place of other stronger rakshasas who would die as a result. Makara is frustrated with the situation. Finally, Gandharva decides to give up on the promised ocean and, in front of a distraught Shakuntala and annoyed Makara, attempts to make an ocean himself.

Season 3[]

Chapter 41: Your Seven Years[]

3-051 surprise

Shakuntala inside the taraka nodes

(6) When Siera Sies enters the mental world of the Taraka clan, he gingerly approaches a figure in the distance. The figure turns around, and it appears to be Shakuntala.

(7) Siera appears to have been attacked by a Taraka clan sura. Agni uses Paradisial Flare against it, only to find that it doesn't work; meaning the target had never killed any humans. After noticing that the sura has some of Shakuntala's qualities, Shess and Agni come to the conclusion that the Taraka sura was one that had devoured Shakuntala. Agni decides to show Gandharva this for confirmation.

Chapter 42: Crossroads[]

(1) As Agni fetches Gandharva, the nastika refuses to acknowledge the fact that his daughter is dead, despite Agni telling him that he saw her in Paradise. When they reach the scene, the Taraka shifts form to resemble Shakuntala and addresses him with "Dad".

(2) Shess continues to stomp on the Taraka, and it begins wailing and calling to Gandharva for help. It continues speaking to Gandharva, saying how he was deceived, judged, and looked down upon by everyone, and that he could only be consoled by his daughter, leading to Gandharva using his Frozen Tear transcendental on the whole place to protect her.

3-054 father and fake

(4) The sura continues to egg Gandharva on, telling him to destroy the barrier and the city of Kalibloom. When Agni attacks it, the sura tells Gandharva to quickly kill Agni, and to not leave her behind, which completely contrasts what the real Shakuntala would say.

(7) Just when Agni decides to kill Gandharva, the Taraka sura directly goes toward Agni. Gandharva then stabs the sura, annihilating it. As the sura crumbles away, it laughs at Gandharva, claiming that it was the Taraka that killed Shakuntala, and that Shakuntala had long gone to Paradise. It is then revealed that when the sura had gone toward Agni, it had told him through insight that the sura was, in fact, Shakuntala. She tells him that it is best that Gandharva thinks that she is just a Taraka sura, and that she dies at his hands. Shakuntala was trying to say things so unlike her normal self so that Gandharva would kill her, but it had not worked until she directly approached Agni with the intent to kill. She tells Agni to take care of Siera, who was used to summon her, and finishes off by apologizing to Agni for placing such a heavy burden on him. Shakuntala requests that Agni does not give up on her father; and with him, the best possible future.
