The Kinnara clan is always neutral. I have crossed over in order to maintain a neutral balance. I have always been ready to help any disadvantaged force.

– Shess's creed[1]

Shess is a rakshasa of the Kinnara clan, and is currently in the human realm. He is one of the oldest rakshasas, born near the beginning of the universe, making him nearly as old as the nastikas. Survival for such a long time is extremely difficult for a rakshasa, so he is a rare occurrence.

Appearance[]

In his human form, Shess appears to be a young man with light skin tone. He has short, messy pink hair, pink eyebrows and pink eyes. He has two short grayish-black horns on his head. Shess wears a pink tracksuit, pink shoes, and pink gloves. The neckline can be pulled up to cover his mouth. There is a white zipper in front, and a hood with pockets for his horns, which he often uses to cover his head.

In his sura form, Shess appears as a large horse-like creature. He has pink eyes, pink fur, and a bright pink mane. He has grayish hooves, and many dark pinkish-gray horns on his head, neck and back. The horns form several large V-shapes on his back. When he uses the transcendental skill Latent Force, we see a glimpse of his 5th-stage form with large, flowing wings.[2]

Personality[]

Shess seems to have a pacifistic and calm personality; he interrupts and avoids fights whenever possible. He's friendly towards everybody he encounters, excluding gods. In particular, he seems to care for children, even if they are hundreds of years old. He has a close relationship with Leny and is always taking care of her. Shess considers any person who attacks her an enemy.[3]

He tells Mr. Kasak that he finds it difficult to be civil to a god,[4] yet he has no problem conversing with Kubera.[5] It is possible that he simply wanted to avoid Agni, who for some reason seems to really want to talk to him.[4]

Despite his smooth and polite way, Currygom states there is a stubborn side to his personality.[6]

Skills and Abilities[]

Transcendental Skills[]

These are listed in the order that Shess uses them in the storyline.

Light breeze
Light Breeze

Effect: controls the flow of air

Shess uses this skill to write in the air using flower petals, "You're a bad liar, Leny." (LINE Webtoons: "Leny, I know you are lying because you're shaking so much.")[3]
Latent force shess
Latent Force

Effect: damage + speed + transcendental resistance enhancement (temporary)

Shess uses this skill to stop Kasak's transcendental attack against Maruna. Wings (which he normally doesn't have) appear while this skill is active.[2]
1-82 blog 10081063229 Self-sacrifice
Self-sacrifice

Effect: recovery

Shess uses this skill to heal Agwen's injuries, which include broken ribs.[7]

Notes[]

  • Currygom originally planned to make Shess muscular with the sura form of a bull instead of a horse. She changed her mind after deciding that she had enough buff characters already.[8]
  • Due a trauma in his past, he is a vegetarian, which reduces his vigor recovery rate significantly in comparison to suras who eat meat.[9]
  • He is the closest to Airavata.
  • He tells Gandharva that he can only imagine his feeling of loss for his daughter, since he has never had any children himself.[3] In the finite, Shess mentions that he has had many lovers, however.
  • He jokes about giving Kasak beatings when he was a child.[10]
  • Even though Shess is nearly as old as the universe, other rakshasas generally call him (as well as each other) by name, without honorifics. In contrast, Kasak calls him Hyung.[11]
  • Agwen likes to buy him hats to hide his horns, since she has known him for a long time.[12]
  • Due to a tumultuous childhood, he is unable to find the "key", an even more intense experience than previously encountered, in order to advance to 5th stage.[13]
  • While nastikas are thought to be the only sura class immune to the insight of the gods. Shess, being nearly as old as the universe, is immune to the insight of the gods as well.[14]

Plot[]

History[]

Shess is the son of Airavata and an extremely old nastika, being born close to the beginning of the universe. He had many older siblings, all of whom were allegedly very strong. He, however, was rather weak and frail in his lower stages.[15]

3-113 Kinnara slayed Original Airavata

Shess and his mother

Shess developed to 4th stage under traumatic circumstances which he can barely remember, and this has led to him being unable to find the key to develop to 5th stage, despite having lived for billions of years and by far exceeding the time normally necessary to develop.[16]

Shess seems to be favored by his mother and a close advisor to her. He follows her every order and would not dare speak out against her, even if she were to torment him.[17] He has a great number of younger siblings who seem to hold grudges against him.[18]

3-108 Shess finds Leny during the Cataclysm

Shess finds Leny

About 150 years ago, Shess was on Willarv and gave Taksaka advice on how to date Ian Rajof. Shess considered himself rather experienced in these matters because he has had many lovers in the past.[19] He was also around when Kasak and then Agwen were born, playing with the children.[20][21]

During the Cataclysm of N0, he stumbled upon a half named Leny who had lost her parents and upon the division of the realms, he took her to the sura realm with him.[17]

The Finite[]

Around 150 years ago, Shess was sent to Willarv by his mother to help Taksaka understand what happened to Ian's village. Shess informed Tak that a red and black dragon claiming to be him demanded a human sacrifice. Specifically, it had to be a girl named Ian Rajof. Her parents refused and hid her, which caused the dragon to attack and destroy the village.

Shess spoke briefly to Hanuman (Ran's grandmother), advising her to break off her relationship with Nard Lehn. He explained he would die soon enough, leaving her in pain, and she should have never left her clan aside in favor of a human friend. She dismissed it, noting a rakshasa shouldn't preach to a nastika.

Season 1[]

Chapter 6: The Past I Yearn For/Longing for Yesterday[]

1-39 coming through the gate

Arrival on Wilarv

(4) When Kubera opens a gate to the sura realm to allow Sagara to come to the human realm, Shess and Leny are part of the group that follows her through.

Chapter 10: The Night it Rained Fire[]

(4) Shess was initially expected to help Sagara's army to attack Atera, but Riagara later explains that he came for a vacation and asked her not to bother him with things that involved attacking humans.

1-68 Leny and Shess 2

Leisure day

(5) Shess later appears with Leny in the vicinity of Kalibloom, surrounded by many pink flowers and playing with butterflies. She said she missed the human realm, but tries not to sound too happy in order to avoid offending him. He then writes a short message for her using the blossoms, telling her she is a bad liar. Gandharva suddenly approaches the duo and is very aggressive, thinking that Shess, and thus the whole Kinnara clan, had joined Sagara's troops. Leny tries to explain to the king that they weren't on Sagara's side, but he tells her to be quiet. Scared, she hides behind Shess, who warns Gandharva that he considers anyone who threatens Leny an enemy. Besides, the Kinnara rakshasa points out that the nastika king is really sensitive today. Gandharva admits it's true and explains his situation. If he wants to see his daughter again he has to do as Kubera says. Shess advises him to calm down, since his clan might get caught in emotional resonance and indirectly help their enemies. In the ensuing conversation, Gandharva learns that Sagara's army is attacking Atera with the help of Maruna, without killing the priest. Enraged, he says Agni would think he took advantage of the loopholes of their promise and turn like the other gods. Seeing the situation, Shess offers to give Gandharva a ride to Atera.

We of the Kinnara clan are neutral, but that does not mean we would even welcome those who bear enmity towards us. In my own case, I regard as enemies not only those who mean me harm, but also those who pose a threat to this child, Leny.

– Shess's beliefs [22]

1-80 Maruna threatens Shess

Stopping Maruna

(16)(17) After leaving Gandharva near Atera, Shess interrupts the fight between Maruna and Mr. Kasak using his Latent Force. Maruna is surprised to see him and asks him if he is participating in the attack now. The Kinnara rakshasa denies it and explains he only brought Gandharva. Maruna curses him for telling his mentor about his participation in the attack and threatens to kill Shess if things go wrong. He leaves, and Shess stops Mr. Kasak from chasing him. Leny warns Shess about an unconscious Agwen nearby.

(19) Shess changes back into human form and proceeds to heal Agwen using Self-sacrifice, while talking to an angry Kasak, who also transforms back to his natural human form. Shess tells Mr. Kasak he should be embarrassed about the way he acted because he put Agwen in danger the whole time. Kasak insists he had made sure his attacks wouldn't hurt her and says he couldn't give Maruna the information he wanted. Shess asks Kasak what happened to his earrings because it's hard for him to have a serious conversation with the way Kasak is right now. Shess reiterates how unfatherly Kasak's behavior was, but Kasak interrupts to repeat that the "chicken brain wanted something I couldn't give." Shess asks what exactly Maruna wanted.

(20) Noticing Kasak's refusal to reveal Maruna's wishes, Shess calculates that whatever it is, Kasak must be holding an "enormous secret." Instead, Shess introduces Leny to Mr. Kasak and asks the half dragon to look after them. At first Kasak refuses, but the rakshasa warns him that if he doesn't help him, he will join Sagara's army. Aside from that, Shess also promises to help take care of Agwen while Kasak is missing his earrings.

Chapter 11: The Power of the Name[]

(2) After Sagara's attack on Atera, Cloche informs her that they don't know the whereabouts of Maruna and Shess, but Gandharva has apparently gone into the depths of the ocean.

Chapter 12: Lies for You[]

1-89 hyung knows nothing

Cute hat

(1) Shess and Mr. Kasak tag along as Agwen and Leny shop in Atera. He says he is glad Agwen remembers him; she even bought him a hat and sponsored him. He tries to convince the Half dragon to talk to his daughter and apologize. Kasak explains she would accept his apologies and act as if everything was all right, but without his earrings she would still be scared of him. Surprised, the rakshasa notes that it must mean Mr. Kasak is not completely emotionless. Shess promises to act as a buffer between father and daughter.

1-100 meeting concerns

Taking a stroll

(12)When Mr. Kasak leaves for the magician's meeting, Shess catches up to him, still worried about him. Mr. Kasak assures him he is treated better than most magicians, but the Kinnara sura warns him Agni will be there and might use insight to learn his secret. The Half dragon reveals that the knowledge was already obtained through insight, so it can't be obtained that way again, but only by written or oral means. Relieved, Shess decides to leave, noting Visnu must have been fond of Kasak. Despite the offer to accompany Mr. Kasak to the meeting, he refuses, stating it's difficult for him to be civil to a god.

Season 2[]

Chapter 16: Caution[]

2-25 worries about Kubera (detail)

Worried for Kubera

(5) Outside of Rindhallow, Shess has a conversation with Kubera. The god tells him to leave if he has no intention of helping him, but the rakshasa points out he did help him by bringing Gandharva to Atera, who saved Sagara and Maruna. He notes that Kubera used to be different and mentions Ananta's death. Shess explains he was sent by his mother to be on the god's side, but will not join with Sagara, because her plan is not what Kubera really wants to follow.

Do not misunderstand. I was not told to join your forces; I was told to be on 'your' side. My mother knows this plan is not what you truly desire. So please... don't abandon yourself like this.

– Shess to Kubera[23]

Chapter 19: Rift[]

2-41 Shess looks for Kubera

No one is home

(1) Shess later tries to pay a visit to Kubera again, but doesn't find him nor any of the Anantas. While wondering what might have happened, he is approached by Mr. Kasak from behind. The Half dragon warns him not to try anything because, unlike last time, he has plenty of vigor. He also reveals that he followed him there. He then asks Shess if and why he is siding with the enemy.

Chapter 21: Frozen Tears[]

2-68 Brilith endangered

Warning visit

(11) As Brilith is sleeping in Atera while god Agni fights in Kalibloom which had been attacked by suras, a suspicious individual puts out all the fires in the temple and their dark hand reaches towards Brilith.

No one saw anyone enter or put out all the candles in Brilith's bedroom and Agwen Rajof was the only one who had visited on that day. Agni interprets this as a warning that his interference was excessive and he should not leave the city.

Chapter 23: The Good/The Line[]

2-81 Leny and Shess

Unproblematic people

(1) During a meeting in Atera with Brilith and Agwen, Agni asks the latter about the Halfs she is sponsoring, Shess and Leny. Agwen replies that she doesn't know them that well, but they are Kinnara Halfs and friends of her father. She nervously asks if there's a problem, but the god replies that it's fine.

Chapterer 26: Outsider[]

2-104 Shess

Full view

(4)In exposition, Maruna explains the conditions for rakshasas and lower-level suras to develop to the next stage. He uses Shess as an example of a sura whose development simply stalled because he is unable to find a key since his past experiences were too intense to surpass.

Chapter 30: Falling Petals[]

(2) Shess is mentioned by Sagara as someone who could possibly fight against Agni for them, since the god's insight will not work on him.

Chapter 31: Your Justice and Mine[]

2-148 questioning shess

Visiting Gandharva

(14) Shess stands before Gandharva who had just left the Polar Sea in his child form, and comments on Gandharva's increasingly weakened condition, only slightly weighed out by the fact that Gandharva's transcendentals are no longer sealed.[24] Shess affirms his own neutrality and asks if Gandharva had chosen his side now. He dispels Gandharva's notions that the humans are weak and at a disadvantage and advises him to watch and make a decision later.

Shess denies claims that he could be an opportunist since he always sides with those at a disadvantage. He also criticizes Gandharva for not interfering when Ananta was in danger and implies that had Ananta been alive, much misfortune could have been avoided.[25] He suggests that the primeval gods must have had a reason to give Ananta his name, possibly because the future with him alive was the optimal one. All that is now left is for everyone to follow their own sense of justice.

An opportunist? I don't know... That would be how you would describe someone who allies themselves with the side that has the advantage, right? It would be inappropriate to call me an opportunist when I side with those at a disadvantage.

– Shess's philosophy[1]

Chapter 32: Loser[]

2-167 Atera

Atera under fire

(3) As Kasak Rajof and Samphati fight overhead, Shess observes the transcendental attacks hitting the fire barrier of Atera. He considers that he would have interfered if the situation had worsened, but thankfully god Chandra chose to prioritize protecting Atera.

Leny mentions that Shess has been disappearing often lately and worries if sponsoring him all the time is not burdening for Agwen. Shess regrets he cannot aid Kasak in an aerial battle and urges Kasak not to force himself to win and to think of his daughter.

Season 3[]

Chapter 35: Return[]

3-002 Leny is safe

Saving Leny

(2) Shess and Agwen are sitting by a beach in Mistyshore while Leny plays in the water. They discuss that Agwen is far happier here than she was in Atera, though she worries that she was unable to find a man for Brilith. Shess jests that Agwen has not been in any relationships either. Agwen is reminded that her father killed her last boyfriend.

A giant wave suddenly heads towards shore. Shess immediately reacts, gets into the water, and picks up Leny. She alerts him that there were other kids who are nowhere to be seen.

(3) Shess dives into the water to search for the children but is unable to find them. He considers that the current may have pulled them out of the barrier and swims out himself. Just when he was about to give up, he spots two boys, holding on to a buoy at the edge of the barrier, seemingly undisturbed by getting so far away from shore. Shess futilely tries to reach them and the boys point out that he is outside of the barrier and will have to go around through the checkpoint.

3-003 Shess tries to reason

Hot Shess

A Gandharva clan sura jumps out of the water, threatening Shess. He rules out returning without the children, since they would not be able to swim all the way to shore. He attempts to gesture for the boys to swim out of the barrier to him, but they cannot understand Shess because he can only use sura speech.

Shess attempts to speak to the sura and warn it to head back, but to no avail. When the sura attacks, he punches it. He wonders how come the surra was so aggressive since he is certain that its king is in a tranquil state.

Shess sees a Taraka portal full of toothy suras beneath the water. He uses a transcendental to get rid of them and make a hole in the barrier, ensuring that the buoy with the boys gets outside of it. He picks them both up and stands on the buoy.

(4) Shess, still with the children in his hands, kicks the attacking sura. He concludes that the sura is not actually a Gandharva but is only wearing the skin of one. The twins admire his strength, comparing him to their father, who is a strong magician.

3-004 evacuation

Leaving

At this moment, said father teleports over, but directly into the mouth of a sura, then freezes it while freezing himself as well. Both boys agree that his magic sucks. Shess recognizes him as Ran Sairofe from a picture that Agwen once showed him and questions if these are the skills of a genius.

Shess worries that the ice is melting, but before he can help Ran, Ran creates a raft using Hoti Brahma, and sends Shess along with the children towards shore. He then electrocutes the remaining suras with fusion magic, hitting himself in the process and eventually fainting. The boys call out to him. Shess acknowledges Ran's remarkable strength.

(5) Shess sits at a vegan restaurant with Agwen and Ran, who had been informed of Shess's identity by then. Agwen informs Ran that the strange suras were of the Taraka clan, but apparently, Ran had already been told by Chandra, who had been sending Ran to kill them.

Chapter 37: Threat[]

3-017 why call on me

Chatting with Ran

(4) Having been summoned to Kalibloom by Chandra, Ran asks Shess to carry him there. Most other means of transportation would be too slow and if Ran were to hire hoti Vayu magicians, Rana would learn of it and think that Ran is running from his priest of water inauguration.

Shess agrees to carry Ran and tells him to get on his back. Shess can move around so quickly not because of a transcendental, he just runs.

Chapter 40: Twisted Bird[]

(1) Kaz Lehn names Shess as a rakshasa friendly to humanity and approved by the gods. He also mentions that Shess took part in the N19 Fighters Championship.

3-038 Shess and Ran

Outside Kalibloom

(2) Having arrived in Kalibloom, Ran feels rather sick from the speed. Shess apologizes for having sunk underwater since running on water is difficult, and he seems happy that the Artram tablet which he uses to communicate is undamaged. Ran is worried to see that the Kalibloom sky is red and there is a red portal above it.

(5) As Ran and Shess made their way to the city, they saw Kasak coming out of the portal and the portal disappearing after. Ran speculates that it must have been a Taraka gate and wonders who could have defeated all the Tarakas. Shess notes that Chandra's strength would be limited under the Chaos barrier, since he fights using transcendentals, and the same thing goes for human magicians who use calculations, though silent magic could have perhaps made things easier.

Ran suddenly recalls a certain magician who could direct the path of lightning using silent magic. He wonders how come he had not thought of that magician for 7 years although she did some horrible things. Ran suggests discussing this with the gods and Kasak.

3-039 Shess

Hi, Maruna

(6) Having reached the checkpoint, Ran wonders whether Agwen registered Shess as her family, since that might make sponsoring him difficult for Ran. Suddenly, a gust of wind ruffles their hair, and Shess notices that Maruna had flown by overhead. He asks Ran to wait for him and runs off.

Maruna had set down Kaz Lehn on a mountain when Shess shows up and asks if Maruna had anything to do with the situation in Kalibloom. Maruna denies this and remembers that Kaz and Shess know each other.

Kaz suddenly speaks up and offers to let Shess develop using the Eye of Perishment. He declares that he will help the rakshasa who uses the Eye to wish for his happiness.

(7) Maruna states that Shess has no reason to develop considering the risks involved, but to his surprise, Shess says he would like to develop if given the chance. The severity of the side effects of the Eye depends on how much the natural time for development gets cut down. Since Shess has exceeded that time by far, the price would not be high for him at all. Maruna panics.

3-044 Gods and Suras alliance

Alliance with the gods

(11) Shess asks Maruna why he is so desperate to develop. Maruna answers that Gandharva has been captured by the gods and the sura realm is in a state that cannot be resolved without developing. Shess assures Maruna that Gandharva will not die, but acknowledges that the sura realm must be a mess judging by the swarming Tarakas.

When Maruna shows surprise at Shess's unfazed reaction, Shess explains that his own clan will be just fine. Since the Kinnaras, Yakshas, and Vritras did not cause problems during the fiendish magic incidents of a thousand years ago, they are on good terms with the gods. Vayu even showed up to create a comfortable environment for the Kinnaras in the sura realm after the Cataclysm.

When Maruna asks if that means they were allied with the gods, Shess says that that is not quite what he meant, and adds that it would be hard for Maruna to understand. Maruna protests that he is over a thousand years old, and he was in his 1st stage at the time, but he still sort of remembers it all and feels that the humans deserved to be punished for renouncing the suras. Shess states that he will be unable to develop right now with that mindset, prompting Maruna to charge up a transcendental and threaten to kill Kaz if Shess insists on developing.

He who has done less wrong has less to fear.

– Shess's wisdom[26]
3-045 everyone bluffing

Everybody calm down

(12) Shess says he understands the situation and will not use the Eye, once more pointing out that Maruna will not be able to wish for a human's happiness if he scares them like he just scared Kaz. Maruna powers down his transcendental.

Shess uses his writing tablet to tell Kaz that he does not want to develop at the cost of antagonizing the Garuda clan and suggests that Kaz should return to the city. Kaz does not seem to wish to go, but Maruna has no clue why.

When Maruna displays curiosity, Shess explains how the tablet works but refuses to let Maruna touch it, reminding Maruna that he had a philosophy not to use human things. Shess advises Maruna to try to understand Kaz's perspective and gain his trust so that Kaz feels safe enough about letting Maruna develop. Maruna lies that he thought of that plan already and understands it completely.

3-045 Kaz is safe

Returning with Kaz

When the two rakshasas consider what to do next, Maruna reveals that the humans know who he is and recollects how he got attacked by a woman magician. Shess concludes that if Chandra blocked the attack and let Maruna escape, then it should be fine for Maruna to return to the city since divine decisions hold absolute weight for humans.

Shess takes Kaz back to the city, planning to ask the gods to allow Maruna entry, while Maruna waits outside. At the checkpoint, Leez Haias is waiting next to Ran.

Chapter 41: Your Seven Years[]

3-046 awkward

Awkward moment

(1) Ran, Leez, Kaz, and Shess walk side by side. Ran worries how best to write a letter so that Rana will not be angry about him running off. Leez reminds him to mention Kasak in the letter since Agwen will want to hear about him. Despite not having met her, Leez has heard a lot about Agwen in the seven years she spent with Kasak in the sura realm. Yuta, however, was not someone she could rely on.

Leez changes the topic and asks Kaz what he has been up to. At that point, Kaz suddenly realizes that the birthday present that he had bought for Leez, Leez the Cat, is gone. He asks Shess to go help him find her.

(4) Kaz and Shess passed Elwin Rakan along the way but Kaz looked really serious and did not even respond to her greeting.

Kaz and Shess seem unable to find Leez the Cat and Shess suggests giving up. She has a collar so if someone finds her, they are sure to contact Kaz. Shess suggests that Kaz's reason for extending the search is that he wishes to avoid Leez. Kaz states that Leez should have died. When he thought she had died, he thought it was an okay ending, but when he learned of her survival, he felt utter despair. Since then, he had been praying for her to die and never return, but his prayers were not answered. After all, the gods are not on her side.

(5) As Shess watches a sleeping Kaz, he thinks that he needs to finally talk to the gods about Maruna. He considers that approaching Chandra should be less complicated. Suddenly, Agni appears before him in his Babo Kim outfit, greeting him cheerfully.

3-050 Babo Kim

Babo Kim is here

When Shess immediately avoids Agni's gaze, Agni wonders why, since he cannot read Shess with insight anyway. Shess answers that even nastikas feel like Agni can read them, though Agni denies this.

Agni admits having a favor to ask and he recognized that Shess has one to ask of him as well. Agni's request is for Shess to use his transcendental to restore the vigor of a human who had taken on a painful role and running out of vigor could threaten his life.

(6) Shess and Agni arrive in the Temple of Chaos where Chandra, Laila Hemawati, and Siera Sies are waiting. Agni introduces Shess to Siera as a half who fought in the N19 championship (and forfeited to Laila) and they revise the details of the experiment.

Siera is to use Taraka fragments to enter the Taraka mental world, then to find and subdue a major node. Ideally, it could be possible to subdue all the nodes and neutralize the whole clan. When connected to the mental world, Siera will receive commands to act as a Taraka and it will be painful to resist them. If Siera fails to fight back, Agni and Chandra will subdue him. Shess comes in if Siera is low on vigor since he can help Siera restore it which will allow the Golden Knight bracelet to resurrect Siera. At that point, Siera will get disconnected from the node.

The experiment begins. Although Siera seems to be struggling, Shess notes that Siera's vigor levels are normal. Suddenly, Siera takes sura form and huge tentacles sprout out of his back.

(7) Chandra carries Laila away from the scene and to the Earth Temple to deactivate the turrets. To make things more difficult, the Siera-Taraka has its eyes open and is nullifying most transcendentals, only Agni seems to have a few he can use. He asks Shess to take sura from and fight the Taraka sura while Agni attacks it.

3-052 It is Shakuntala

It's Shakuntala

The sura seems entirely undisturbed by Agni's Paradisial Flare which should mean that it never killed any humans at all since the flare deals damage based on the number of murders committed by the target. However, it is highly unlikely that a rakshasa above 3rd stage would have never killed anyone, even if only on orders. Together, Agni and Shess deduce that this must mean the summoned rakshasa is likely Shakuntala.

Agni decides that Gandharva needs to see this and so he asks Shess to handle the Taraka while he goes gets the nastika. Since the small favor Agni originally asked for is getting bigger by the second, Shess presents the favor he wanted to ask for - for Maruna to be allowed to use the Eye of Perishment.

Chapter 42: Crossroads[]

(1) Agni worries that allowing Maruna to develop could be dangerous for them, but Shess advises him to decide after using insight, since Maruna is prepared to meet with the gods.

3-053 Watching suras fighting

Stomping the Taraka

Before taking sura form, Shess requests that the Taraka sura must be killed. Fighting such a sura for a prolonged time results in a temporary seal on one's transcendentals and he has no wish to lose his transcendentals while helping another race. If Agni insists on bringing Gandharva, it is his responsibility to prevent him from getting in the way. Shess takes sura form and stomps on the Taraka sura with his hooves.

When Agni brings Gandharva over, Gandharva gets excited that Shakuntala lives and seems reluctant to acknowledge that she got eaten by a Taraka. The Taraka sura calls out to him in sura speech. Shess reminds Agni to remember his words and warns them that if Gandharva tries to stop him from killing that sura, he will stomp the nastika under his feet.

3-054 effect of tears

K.O.

(2) As Shess continues crushing the Taraka, she starts calling out to her father for help in sura speech. Agni surrounds Gandharva with a circle of Paradisial flare to stop him from interfering. The Taraka taunts Gandharva that he will never be accepted by others, only mocked, judged, and insulted. As a tear drips from Gandharva's eye, his Frozen Tears Transcendental hits the ground with much force.

Having been hit by the mental transcendental, Shess has returned to human form and seems to have lost his will to fight entirely. He is shaking violently and mumbling something about marrying someone if they do not hurt their baby.

(3)(8) Agni picks up Shess into his arms and carries him into the Temple of Earth where Chandra and Laila are waiting. Laila considers whether she could help Shess by dream tracking, but Chandra advises against it since the enemies in Shess's dreams are probably nastikas. Chandra is confident that Shess will wake up soon enough on his own.

Chapter 47: Words That Never Reached You[]

(2) As Sagara gets ready to launch her plans, she reveals that she already has a pawn in Kalibloom, a powerful card that can cause havoc within the city. It is the same person who impeded Agni's movement by threatening Agni's summoner seven years ago[27], someone who is immune to insight and who was sponsored by a high-ranking magician and thus had access to the Temple.

Shess takes sura form and stomps down the Temple of Earth.

3-103 Kasak blow away Shess' head

Beheaded

(3) Since Shess's eyes are a teal blue, Gandharva realizes Shess is still under the effect of his Frozen Tears transcendental. He considers this strange since Shess had been hit with this transcendental numerous times in the past and he was never affected for this long.

Kasak Rajof takes sura form and faces the rampaging Shess, cutting off his head. Even before regenerating, Shess launches a transcendental and Kasak blocks it with one of his own.

3-106 Shess is down

Unmovilized

(4)(6) Shess and Kasak claw at each other, drawing blood. Finally, Chandra arrives and knocks Shess unconscious. Shess is lying on the ground still in sura form, restrained, headless, and with green blood gushing out.

(8) Chandra decides that Leny is to be used as a medium for Gandharva to enter Shess's dream and wake him up. With insight, Chandra learned that Leny was rescued by Shess during the Cataclysm when she lost her parents, and she has been following Shess for the last 23 years.

(10) Inside the dream, Gandharva finds himself in the age of the Ancient humans. There is a large gathering of Kinnara clan suras happening on a human planet where surafication is prohibited and a third stage Shess can be seen standing beside Airavata. But she is not the Airavata that is known in the current times, she is an entirely different nastika.

3-111 Gandharva catches Shess

Gandharva grabs Shess

(11) Airavata is helping Agni and ancient Brilith conduct an experiment that should make it possible for humans to defeat nastikas. Little Shess worries about the safety of the experiment, but Airavata calms him down and asks him to wait outside while she proceeds with the experiment.

A group of nastikas discusses that they are following Airavata only because she is stronger than Kinnara, but they have doubts concerning her alliance with the humans. They notice Shess and forbid him from spreading what they said. Apparently, Kinnara used to be strong and her children were strong as well, but her last child, Shess, is surprisingly weak.

Suddenly, transcendentals start raining from the sky. Shess runs off calling Airavata's name. He falls into a pit but Gandharva catches him.

(12) Shess starts immediately panicking and crying for help. Airavata appears and threatens to murder Gandharva if he hurts Shess in any way. She also suspects Gandharva of being involved in whatever attack is happening. Gandharva attempts to convince her that he means no harm, but she is only convinced when Menaka appears and speaks out in Gandharva's favor.

The nastikas gather, Shess standing by Airavata's side, and they observe the attack conducted by the gods. Apparently, even fifth zen gods are among them. Gandharva reveals that the gods saw a future in which the humans become their equals and so they decided to eradicate the whole race. Many sura clans will join the attack as well. Brahma will then create a new human race which will be weaker and more dependant on the gods.

3-112 Kinnara wants Shess back

Airavata protecting Shess

Kinnara arrives, standing on the side of the gods, and challenging Airavata. She tells Shess to come to her side, but he only clings to Airavata even stronger. Kinnara blames her loss of power on Shess and suspects that Airavata grew stronger because she stole Shess from her. When Shess still refuses to come to her, Kinnara slashes at him with a spear.

Airavata blocks the blow but to her surprise, the wound starts spreading and she is unable to regenerate. She crumbles to the ground. Kinnara explains that this is part of the process of Brahma correcting the errors of the universe. Since the king must be the strongest, Brahma has given Kinnara a weapon which allows her to take Airavata's name for herself.

3-112 Original Airavata fades away

Farewell

Kinnara slashes Airavata once more and Shess runs to Airavata with tears in his eyes. Midstep, he develops to fourth stage. He begs her not to leave him. Airavata is happy to see that he has grown and she dissolves.

(13) The gods congratulate Kinnara for gaining the power that two names have to offer. It is revealed that in exchange for the gods' help, Kinnara promised to help them exterminate the current humans.

Gandharva realizes that Airavata must have been removed from everyone's memories. The fact that Shess cannot remember this incident that hurt him must be why he cannot develop to 5th stage. This dream that Gandharva is seeing must be one engraved in Shess's soul.

Suddenly, the weapon that Agni and the humans were developing looms over the land, and the gods cheer that they are about to die. Kinnara claims that she is now Airavata and attempts to lead Shess away, but he refuses. When Gandharva steps in, Kinnara takes on the shape of Airavata claiming that she is now stronger than him, but Gandharva warns her that living with two names is problematic, since he knows one who shattered his own name by trying to do this.

3-113 Reunited

Embrace

When Kinnara starts blaming Shess for everything that went wrong, a blue flame sweeps the area and makes her disappear. Gandharva does his best to protect Shess, but his regeneration does not seem to be strong enough.

At this point, Airavata blocks the fire. Shess walks to her, claiming that she is the real Airavata, since Kinnara would only ever take that form to torment him. Even without the power of her name, and after being apart for endless times, she who will save him finally found him.

The dream ends and Shess, now back in human form, is hugging a crying Leny.

Even without the power of her name... after wandering for an eternity of time... she who will finally lift this nightmare away... the one person who will save me...

– Shess about Airavata/Leny[16]

(14) Leny expresses joy that Shess has awoken. He tries to tell her something, but she cannot hear. Shess asks if his dream scared Leny, but she says she cannot remember it. She only feels like something is missing. Shess writes that this is the first time he remembers everything, and in sura speech, he finishes that he is no longer scared because she is there with him.

3-118 Shess and Leny

With Leny

(18) Gandharva and Chandra discuss the situation as Shess sits by with a sleeping Leny in his arms. Gandharva suspects that what happened must have been caused by the Taraka clan since Shess's response to the frozen tears was not normal. Chandra finds holes in Gandharva's logic and states that he would have killed Shess before he could do any real damage. He suspects the purpose may have been to get the gods to trust Gandharva so that he could betray them.

Chandra emphasizes that he does not trust Gandharva one bit and then he teleports elsewhere. When Gandharva seems rather down, Shess tells him not to let Chandra's words get to him since that is what the god treats everyone like.

Reluctantly, Gandharva apologizes to Shess. For hitting Shess with the transcendental and for having been so scornful of Shess in the past. Shess tells Gandharva that he is grateful to be included in Gandharva's inner circle but advises him that he should take an interest in those outside the circle as well if he truly wishes to change.

Everyone has a past, Gandharva. All the humans you killed had stories of their own as well. (...) Perhaps you should take more of an interest in those outside your circle... if you truly wish to change and move forward.

– Shess advising Gandharva[28]

Chapter 48: Separation[]

(1) While attacks on multiple cities are underway, Shess shows up to convince Kasak Rajof to stay and protect Kalibloom instead of going to help Agwen Rajof in Atera.

(3)(4) When a group of rakshasas attacks the Kalibloom barrier, Kasak takes sura form, much larger than ever before. Shess asks him if he would be alright in that form, and Kasak advises Shess to go look after Laila Hemawati instead of worrying, as she may be a target.

(7) Kasak starts to struggle in the fight when Taraka arrives at the city with her eyes open. Shess approaches Gandharva and asks if he had decided to fight. Gandharva declares that this is the day that Taraka will be destroyed, to which Shess responds by offering aid. He also informs Gandharva that Maruna is unable to approach the planet because he has developed to 5th stage and appears surprised that Chandra had not informed him.

3-129 Shess watching Mecha Agni

Frozen

(9)(11) As Kasak, Shess and Gandharva fight Taraka and her minions, Kasak points out that Taraka's regeneration is too good and Shess worries that their Transcendental skills will get sealed soon at this rate. Suddenly, a huge humanoid Taraka clan sura, resembling the weapon that the Ancient Human Race once created, appears. Shess freezes in place and does not budge even when Kasak yells at him. As the huge sura attacks Shess, Taraka entangles it in her tentacles, thus helping the group.

(23) When Chatan sees Shess standing frozen, he reveals that they are brothers and says that although he personally dislikes Shess, he will do the bare minimum as their mother favors Shess. Shess recovers his senses and gets addressed by Taksaka, who is standing below him. Taksaka orders him to go to the city.

3-146 Smashed Shess

Smashed Shess

(26) Shess reaches the Temple of Earth only to see that Chatan is kidnapping Leny and has smashed Ran Sairofe to the ground. Shess asks Chatan to take a different candidate, not Leny. Chatan responds that if Shess brings him another candidate, he would return Leny to Shess, otherwise, she will be used for Ananta's resurrection.

Shess attempts to attack Chatan, but before he can take sura form, Chatan squashes him with a transcendental. Chatan then tells Shess that he went easy on him and warns him that other brothers of theirs also seek to get back at Shess.

Chapter 49: The Golden Knight 2[]

(6) Shess is sitting on his bed next to the bed where Ran is sleeping when Rana Remia comes by to pick up Chandra's cloak which Ran had with him. She makes sure that Shess is alright and admits that healing him with Hoti Asvins was far more difficult than healing a human would be. Shess thanks her and Rana leaves. Shess recalls Chatan asking him to bring another candidate in exchange for Leny and wonders where to find one.
